A wartime journey of love, loss, and survival

Katyusha is a 2D platform RPG that blends pixel art nostalgia with a grounded depiction of World War II. Developed by Loresoft, the game reframes a historic conflict through a personal journey, inviting players to experience war not only as combat, but as memory, loss, and perseverance.

Drawing inspiration from the famous Soviet song, Katyusha tells the story of a young woman searching for her beloved after the German invasion. Her decision to follow the Red Army east transforms a simple love story into a sweeping narrative shaped by real battles and historical figures.

War through a personal lens

At its core, Katyusha combines side scrolling platforming with role-playing progression and tactical combat. Players fight using melee combos, ranged weapons, and skill driven stealth kills, while earning experience to unlock healing, movement, and weapon abilities. Checkpoints cleverly appear as mailboxes, reinforcing the theme of letters as survival, memory, and connection amid constant danger and emotional uncertainty throughout her journey.

The game’s strongest pillar is immersion, achieved through historically grounded missions and authentic characters. The game meets legendary Soviet figures who train, fight, and sometimes fall beside her, exactly as history recorded. Seeing comrades survive or die based on real events adds weight to every encounter, turning progression into an emotional investment rather than a checklist for the player throughout the campaign.

Innovation emerges through its companion system and branching outcomes. Katyusha’s steppe eagle grows alongside her, gaining experience, new abilities, and a relationship shaped by player choices. Whether fed or commanded aggressively, the eagle’s behavior changes in battle and puzzles, reinforcing agency. Multiple endings further ensure that decisions echo long after the final firefight. However, note that this game is still in active development.

A poignant indie game

Ultimately, Katyusha stands out by treating World War II with respect and intimacy rather than spectacle alone. Its pixel art style, stirring soundtrack inspired by wartime songs, and use of real soldiers’ letters create a somber tone. Loresoft’s ambitious indie project promises a moving blend of action, history, and human emotion worth following closely as development continues toward release worldwide.
